Pomar de Valdivia: what to see, where to stay and eat

Pomar de Valdivia is a municipality in the La Valdivia district of northern Palencia, and one of the municipalities in the Las Loras UNESCO Global Geopark, the first in Castilla y León, designated in 2017. If limestone uplands, caves and karst scenery are your thing, it makes an easy outing from Aguilar de Campoo. The municipality takes in fourteen villages, and two of them, Cezura and Lastrilla, are Palencia enclaves inside the Cantabrian municipality of Valderredible. In Revilla de Pomar is the Cueva de los Franceses, set up for visitors with a route of about 500 metres and a visitor centre opened by the Diputación de Palencia in 2009. Its name recalls the French soldiers left there during the Peninsular War. A waymarked path runs from the cave to the Canto Hito standing stone, and 1.5 km away the Valcabado viewpoint looks out over the Valderredible valley. Handy to know: Aguilar de Campoo railway station is actually in Camesa de Valdivia, within this municipality.
