Cervera de Pisuerga: what to see, where to stay and eat

Cervera de Pisuerga is the main town of the Montaña Palentina and a handy base for exploring the Montaña Palentina Natural Park: the park's visitor centre is here, with a permanent exhibition on the brown bear. The municipality is the largest in the province of Palencia, at around 325 km², and takes in 23 villages besides the town itself, which sits just over 1,000 m above sea level. Start in the old town, listed as a historic site in 2010: an arcaded square with 16th- and 17th-century stone pillars, and manor houses carved with coats of arms. At the top stands the church of Santa María del Castillo, 16th-century Gothic, whose Santa Ana chapel holds Juan de Flandes's Adoration of the Magi, painted in 1495. On the edge of town, by the Pisuerga, is the rock-cut hermitage of San Vicente, surrounded by graves hewn into the stone. A short drive away you'll find the Ruesga and Requejada reservoirs and the walking route to the Tosande yew wood.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Cervera de Pisuerga?

Cervera de Pisuerga is 116 km from Palencia, about 25 km from Aguilar de Campoo and about 35 km from Guardo by road. The nearest mainline Renfe station is Aguilar de Campoo, with trains to Madrid, Palencia, Valladolid and Santander, while the narrow-gauge León–Bilbao trains stop at Vado, just outside Cervera. There are also buses to Palencia and to Aguilar and Burgos, plus on-demand services to the surrounding villages; check timetables with the operators before you travel.

What can I see in Cervera de Pisuerga in a day?

A day in Cervera de Pisuerga is enough to wander the old town and its arcaded square, climb to the church of Santa María del Castillo to see Juan de Flandes's 1495 panel painting, and walk out to the rock-cut hermitage of San Vicente by the Pisuerga. Add the Montaña Palentina Natural Park visitor centre on Calle Plantío and the town's museums: the Piedad Isla Ethnographic Museum, in the Gutiérrez de Mier house, and Casa Cantarranas, devoted to rural architecture and ethnography. In the afternoon, head out to the Ruesga reservoir.

Are there bears around Cervera de Pisuerga?

Yes. The Cantabrian brown bear lives in the Cervera de Pisuerga area, alongside Iberian wolves, golden eagles, chamois and red deer, whose rutting calls echo through the woods in autumn. Bears are a protected species and a sighting in the wild is never guaranteed. For a closer look, the Montaña Palentina Natural Park visitor centre in Cervera has a permanent exhibition, 'Zona Oso', centred on Pintojo, a mounted brown bear that died in the Montaña Palentina.

What's the weather like in Cervera de Pisuerga, and when should I go?

Cervera de Pisuerga has a mountain oceanic climate: in the 1961–2003 records, January averages 1.5 °C and July 17.3 °C, with around 1,000 mm of rain a year. July and August are the driest months (about 35 mm each), so they're the most reliable for walking; October to January is the wettest stretch. Autumn is also when the red deer rut.
