The reward
The Roblón itself: a sessile oak 17 m tall and 10.6 m round at the base, fenced off for protection and listed as a notable tree of Castilla y León.
The walk
To get there, leave Cervera de Pisuerga on the Potes road. Once you have crossed the bridge over La Requejada reservoir and passed Vañes, turn right: the car park where the trail begins is about two kilometres along.
The path is clear and well waymarked. You cross the tail of the reservoir on a footbridge and, at the first fork, take the left-hand branch up a small valley. Through a metal gate you enter mixed beech and oak woodland, and a short detour brings you face to face with the Roblón. It is reckoned to be over 500 years old, and some put it at 800. It has survived a lightning strike, which left its mark, and the axe: it was marked for felling decades ago, but never cut down.
The way back continues through woodland of sessile and Pyrenean oak, beech, holly, whitebeam and rowan, then drops down another little valley to the reservoir. From there you rejoin the opening stretch and cross the same bridge back to the car. Along the way there are views of Estalaya village and the Peña Labra range. It is a mix of track and footpath, and the park recommends it all year round.
