Santa Eulalia Chapel (Barrio de Santa María)

A Romanesque chapel on a hillside at Barrio de Santa María, above the Aguilar reservoir. It is one of the purest, best-preserved examples of northern Romanesque, and inside the apse there are wall paintings from around 1300, including a scene of Hell.

About

The chapel of Santa Eulalia, also known as Santa Olalla, stands in Barrio de Santa María, a hamlet belonging to Aguilar de Campoo. It sits on a hillside surrounded by meadows, looking out over the banks of the Aguilar reservoir.

It was once the parish church of the old Barrio de Santa Olalla, a settlement mentioned in medieval records. Today it is regarded as one of the purest and best-preserved examples of Romanesque in northern Palencia. It is built of good-quality dressed stone.

The highlight is inside. The apse holds wall paintings from around 1300, among them a remarkable depiction of Hell.

The chapel closes in winter and there is a small admission charge. Before you go, check opening times with the Aguilar de Campoo tourist office.
