The Tosande Yew Forest Trail is a 10.5 km circular route of moderate difficulty, taking about 3 hours 30 minutes, that climbs from Dehesa de Montejo up the Tosande valley to one of the largest stands of yew in western Europe. The full loop is only open in spring and summer; in autumn and winter you go up and back the same way, and the trail closes on days when a hunt is scheduled.
The yew wood itself: centuries-old yews growing inside a beech forest, some over 145 cm across and more than 15 m tall, plus a viewpoint above 1,400 m, the highest point of the walk.
The route starts from the car park on the C-626 road by Dehesa de Montejo, next to the Jardín de la Tejeda, an interpretation garden worth a look before you set off. You head down the track, pass under the old La Robla railway and follow the bed of the Tosande stream, usually dry, past the spoil heaps of a disused mine and through a narrow limestone gorge.
As the track works up the valley the woodland changes quickly: holm oak, then oak, then beech. In the meadows you can spot megalithic burial mounds around 4,000 years old. Before you reach a hut, the path turns left into the beech forest on the slopes of Peña Oracada (1,818 m), where the yews grow. It is a climb with natural steps and benches for a breather. Inside the yew wood you must stay on the path.
In spring and summer it is a loop: up to the yews, out to the viewpoint and down another hollow through a holly wood. That descent is closed from mid-autumn until spring, when you return the way you came. On days when a hunt is scheduled the whole trail is closed; the Casa del Parque visitor centre in Cervera has the dates.
