Santos Justo y Pastor Rock-Cut Church

Museum · Aguilar de Campoo
An exhibition centre on Romanesque art set inside the church and sacristy of the Santa María la Real monastery in Aguilar de Campoo. It is the best place to get your bearings on the Romanesque of the Palencia mountains before heading out to the churches themselves.
ROM (Románico y Territorio) fills the church and sacristy of the Santa María la Real monastery, on the Cervera road just outside Aguilar de Campoo. It opened in 2006 and explains everyday life in a medieval village, which gives useful context for the churches you will see around the area.
The monastery itself is reason enough to come. Legend places its origins in the early 9th century, but it is documented from the early 11th, when it began to receive donations. In 1169 Alfonso VIII brought in a community of Premonstratensian monks, who carried out a major Romanesque building programme.
Restoration began in 1978, and today it is a leading centre for research into, promotion and restoration of historic heritage.
The monastery runs guided tours (booking required) and seasonal activities. Opening times and prices vary through the year, so check with the centre by phone before you go.
